The Constitutional Court of Poland (which includes illegally appointed judges) just made a ruling regarding abortion law.
Abortion in PL is now illegal for p. much ANY reason. Women will be forced to give birth not just to children that result from rape. It'll actually be illegal to abort a foetus without lungs or a brain. No, this is not an exaggeration.
This is a EU country in 2020. Difficult to imagine, right?
Do you have sources for the ban in case of rape? All newspapers I check say thing like "It means abortion is only valid in cases of rape or incest, or to protect the mother's life." (bbc).
In any case, this is really serious and I hope the EU can have the power to do something about it.
Correction: Abortion of foetuses conceived as a result of crime or in situations of danger to the mother are currently allowed, but
A) It's still egregious.
B) A conservative politician in today's discussion on TVN said that they (PIS Party) will be working towards banning abortion altogether. She said it explicitly on television. Didn't even hide behind a euphemism.
No problem! And I agree with all of your statements there.
The politician, Lidia I think was her name, when asked if she thought 12 year olds should be forced to give birth, said that "no 12 year old should ever get pregnant" and when it was pointed out that the question was about rape, she just avoided it.
She also said people should be forced to give birth to terminally ill babies. And all she proposed was counseling.
this is so evil, they did it exactly when no one could protest and so many people will get hurt oh my god I hate this so much, I thought Russia was the most retrograd country in eastern europe but this is just another level, I hope they don't get the same idea
you're not wrong, but in the US it at least seems that most people want to vote for politicians that will scale back the shit.
In Poland, the ruling party continues to enjoy decent levels of support. Not an outright majority, but more than any other party.
There's something fundamentally wrong with how Polish people approach politics (I don't wanna say a lot of Poles are dumb shits, but it kinda feels like they're dumb shits).

The reality is that it is not true... yet. Politicians from the ruling party are already talking about introducing a law that'd enforce such a ban.
Sorry about the confusion/misinformation.

They tried a few times to introduce a harsher abortion law, but chickened out after extremely widespread protests.
So they figured they'd change the situation via Constitutional Court ruling, while pretending to keep their hands clean.
This is unbelievably evil, but I guess that's how ultra-conservative Catholics roll.

A near-complete ban on abortion in 2020, in a country that's part of the European Union, is still insane.
There's no major country in Europe (nost jut EU) with abortion law even NEAR that restrictive.
The abortion law in Malta is less strict. And Malta is a country that was literally founded as a religious order.
