Platform coops shouldn't just build alternatives to successful tech firms, but also identify failed tech firms that could have succeeded as #coops.

Any ideas of tech firms that failed, for example, due to conflicts of interest between owners and users that could have been resolved with user ownership?

My hunch is that there could be something with coupon sites and other referral commission based firms. Lot of conflicts of interest there that could be resolved with a different ownership model.

Happy independence day to #Estonia!

Despite having been a colony of Russia just 30 years ago it has:

- The best education system in Europe (better than the US despite 60% lower GDP per capita)

- Most tech unicorns per capita in the world

@nemobis

I don't know. My impression is that social mobility rates vary very little across countries and time periods if instead of just correlation between parents and children one uses surname analysis spanning more generations.
Hm. The last time someone tried to do that with Italian academia, a dangerously incorrect book came out of it. I imagine one can come up with better methods but the error rates would be different and hard to control across languages and countries, so I suspect it might be useful at best for trends in individual monolingual countries.

Will you also provide ARMv6/ARMv7 binaries at your releases one day – for those currently running Gitea on e.g. BananaPis?
@IzzyOnDroid yes. There is a need for testers willing to verify the result works as intended. Would you like to be part of such a team?

~ @dachary
@dachary I don't think I'll have much time to do real testing. On my end, it's indeed running on a BananaPi with Armbian, mostly mirroring my repos from different places but also being primary for my local stuff (configurations etc), so it would be bad if it "breaks things". But if the worst thing should "usually" be that the binary isn't starting up, or anything else that could be fixed by just replacing it with the previous Gitea, why not.
@IzzyOnDroid that's an idea. Maybe forgejo could publish untested binaries somewhere for people to try, knowing it "maybe works". In a different repository so there is no confusion: that would be valuable. It is very low effort for the current release process to do that. The key is to be very clear and not give people false hope that it is "field tested" 😃

What do you think?
@IzzyOnDroid Which model of BananaPI do you have exactly?
@dachary IIRC it was the M1. (Checking…) Yes.
@IzzyOnDroid
... and could you please tell me which Gitea binary you are currently running?

but maybe we can continue this conversation on the issue that was created to provide armv6/v7 binaries?

https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/issues/117
@IzzyOnDroid I got my answer from a three years old post of yours 😃

You are running arm-6

Today's "pre-forum" event was so poorly communicated, I thought it's cancelled. Even on Forum's website https://2021.ngiforum.eu/ in some places dates are 17-19 May and in some 18-19 May. Do you plan to release recordings from today's event? Thanks.
That is quite unfortunate! We are not involved with organizing the entire event, only the open hardware workshop tomorrow. I expect you are referring to the self-sovereign identity event? I will check for you regarding recordings.
There is a recording of yesterdays event released here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NzY9spKyKvM

Alpress

Guys from #Warsaw come up with a nice initiative. See you at #FOSDEM2021 .

https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/event/alpress/

Alpress
Self-Governing Publication Platform

Day: Sunday
Start: 13:55
End: 14:15

Alpress is the new project of the Almonit organization. It is a self-governing decentralized platform for publishing articles.

Alpress looks and feels like a classical Internet platform, but in practice, it is owned, governed, and operated by its own users. The platform is made with a combination of ENS, IPFS, and DAO technologies.

Alpress is not only aimed to become the main dWeb place for publishing articles but is also meant an inspiration for developers to build more self-governing Internet platforms. Such platforms, which are democratic in nature, can create a future where the web belongs to the people of the Internet.

Problems with following peertube channel

Hello. I'd like to follow #apconf2020 #PeerTube channel @ActivityPub Conference . I've followed it, but I cannot see it on my contacts list. Also adding it or removing from any group does not work. On contact page I can see "Unfollow" button and a tick next to "Friends" group: https://quitter.pl/contact/25637

cc: @Mikolaj@Friendica Support
I think I handled this. However, I cannot import any post from them through pasting it into search field. Probably another bug 😀 Example post:

Building a better GoodReads with ActivityPub

LearnAwesome.org is building an open-source learning map for humanity. It curates and categorizes learning resources across topics, formats and much more. It is also a social network - much like GoodReads - that's focused on learning. It implements standards like ActivityPub, RSS, LRMI schema and more. This is the video for my talk given at ActivityPub Conf 2020.

Don't loose posts from rare posters anymore!

I had a problem with #, compared to Faceshit. I constantly read posts by only the most frequently posting accounts. And others were just lost on the timeline.

So I made a little script. Idea is to group contacts by posting frequency into couple of groups created just for this purpose, like "rare", "very rare" and "frequent". I run this script from time to time to automatically move contacts between these groups.

https://github.com/loziniak/red-scripts/blob/master/friendica-regroup.red

Script is written in Red, you can check the language out here: http://www.red-lang.org/

@Friendica Support # #
This looks great. How can us luddites access it?
I'm working on releasing it as a binary. Until then, it can be run with Red runtime (use automated builds).

I've got one problem with #Friendica, and I think #fediverse in general. Very often people include links to #YouTube in their posts, or embed pictures from non-free and #tracking sites. I have #uBlockOrigin installed and it blocks such content in my timeline.

Perhaps services should copy/cache such content? YouTube videos could be replaced by static pictures with link to original video maybe? Don't you think it is a #privacy issue?

thornedu reshared this.

I like the idea of just presenting a static image or link to the original source. It clearly is a privacy problem.
It's definitely a privacy issue, but there is also sort of a solution:
pods can use camo to download and cache on behalf of their users. Nothing you can do as an individual, though, except block by default.

BTW, I'd say this is a privacy issue also if you don't trust the pod of every single person in your stream.

Well, actually, the stuff on the right is ideas, too. 'Real life' isn't real life, it's an idea. 'In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they're different.' [Attributed to Yogi Berra]

How can we make the journey from theory to practice? (Another set of ideas, but they might point to something real....)
Also, I like to think that online life is not less real than "real life"! The journey is simple, we stop posting, and start doing. Or wait, isn't posting also doing? 😉

Somewhat radical, but mostly true.

#SurvaillenceCapitalism is a disease and #Privacy measures and #FreeSoftware are the #Vaccination.

If most people used free software and cared for their privacy we'd have #HerdImmunity and nobody could collect #BigData about society.

But if you use any #GAFAM ( #Google #Amazon #Facebook #Apple #Microsoft ) anti-services you are exposing everybody in your contacts list. You're basically an #AntiVaxer.

So if you have #WhatsApp #GMail or anything like that please remove me from your contacts.

Distributed GitHub. How cool is that!

#ForgeFed update! 😀

We're planning to implement in both #Pagure and #Gitea. Still waiting to finalize funding details with NLNet.

Implementation of author-hosted tickets in Vervis is in progress, and so is OAuth2. Next will come patches/MRs, and then we can finally release that Draft 1 along with a demo.

We're looking into making better docs, maybe a talk too. Would you prefer to read, or to see/hear me explaining? 😋
